De egel en de vos: Over logica, taal en waarheid bij Lesniewski en Tarski. Betti, A. Algemeen Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Wijsbegeerte, 96(3):208–216, 2004.
abstract   bibtex
In this programmatic paper, I propose to examine Tarski's work on truth in its historical context, in particular by comparing Tarski's ideas with those of his teacher, Stanislaw Lesniewski. Building on recent findings, I argue that Tarski's ideas on semantics are significantly different from Lesniewski's, and that this difference squares with the opposition sketched in the dichotomies logic as language vs. logic as calculus and language as universal medium vs. language as calculus. I also suggest that a comparison of Lesniewski's and Tarski's position based on this opposition can help us understand and critically assess present-day practices in logic, as well as contribute to the (rather dormant) debate on issues like: can a purely syntactic construction be made meaningful by means of a model-theoretical mapping? If not, what should a logic with a proper semantics look like? (edited)
