A Planning-Based Architecture for a Reconfigurable Manufacturing System [link]Paper  abstract   bibtex
This paper describes a novel use of planning in Reconfigurable Manufacturing. Authors have had the opportunity to considered the nodes of a manufacturing plant as individual AI-based agents able to plan their own action, reasoning on updated representation of their domain model, and execute. This paper aims at clarifying the role of planning, its connection with both a goal selection mechanism, and the agent's knowledge. We describe in detail how a planning system has been customized for the task of planning and execution and show results of a realistic simulation. We also discuss the connection with the industrial module and illustrate some simplification that its built-in control mechanism offers with respect to the integration in other scenarios of planning and execution mechanisms.
