Paper abstract bibtex Many claims exist in the literature on the usefulness of design patterns for program comprehension. However, no experimental studies exist to confirm or to infirm these claims, partially due to the lack of appropriate techniques to define and to assess the benefits of design patterns. We present an experimental setting, based on eye-tracking techniques, to assess the benefits of design patterns during program comprehension and a first illustrative experiment. This experimental setting and experiment are but a first step towards a comprehensive understanding of the use of design patterns during program comprehension.
