Paper abstract bibtex This article gives a brief account of the meaning of the term `phonetic transcription' and provides a description of the various types of transcriptions that have been used since early times. These include both those based on the Roman alphabet and the non-Roman varieties. The terms `iconic,' `organic,' and `analphabetic' are explained. Various devices that have been used to address the deficiencies of the Roman alphabet are described. The main part of the article is a historical account, from the 16th century up to the present time, of various attempts to devise a satisfactory method of transcribing speech.
