The invitation extended to me by the School of Commerce, Accounts, and Finance of New York University, to spend some weeks there as Ford Distinguished Visiting Professor and to deliver a series of public lectures, provided me a welcome opportunity to reflect about the organizational and social implications of these rapid technical developments. The lectures, slightly expanded here from the form of their public presentation, record the product—a very speculative product—of my reflections.
