The possible location of C in W xMo yC zS 2 nanotubes was explored. The possible transfer of C species from the film to the tubes by beam irradiation was ruled out. High resolution transmission electron microscopy showed that amorphous materials covering the tube surfaces were absent. Subsequent reexamination of the protruding tubes showed no significant increase in C-signal intensity. Only three empty tubes exhibited a low intensity C-signal intensity from the 20 individual nanotubes examined. The C signal from the protruded section of the tubes was evident. This tube shows highly regular walls with a 6.2 Åseparation.
