A Gentle Introduction to Support Vector Machines in Bioinformatics. Sethi & J, R. OJB, 2005.
abstract   bibtex
The inter-disciplinary nature of Bioinformatics makes it inherently difficult to quickly and easily disseminate new information, especially given the intricate and highly sophisticated nature of Bioinformatics research. Thus, new paradigms and technologies are relegated to the domain of a scant literati and remain out of reach for the rest. Support Vector Machines uniquely exemplify this idea as they suffer from a hat-trick of curses: they're mathematically involved, the algorithms to implement them are labyrinthine, and their applications are in highly complex areas of biology. In this paper, I attempt to provide a multi-disciplinary introduction to Support Vector Machines with the aim of making this a gentle introduction to the biological applications for the mathematicians, to the algorithms for the biologists, and to the mathematics for the computer scientists.
