This work is concerned with discourses in which two discourse units are connected with several connectives. We focus on two specific cases. In the first case, we consider the French connectives mais and aussi, which are used to denote the discourse relations CONTRAST and PARALLEL. We show that these two connectives are capable of connecting the same discourse units, even though their semantic descriptions suggest that they are incompatible, and that this fact has to be taken into account in any formal approach to discourse. The second case involves the connectives en effet and et. We show that the semantic properties of et are such that it can only combine with one of the possible interpretations of en effet, which, as a consequence, disambiguates en effet when it is combined with it.
