Punchcard to laser printer [link]Paper  abstract   bibtex
I inherited an aging laser printer that proved to be related to my twitchy dot matrix. After producing two pages it refused to print until turned off and then on again. Despite the terrific print quality, when the toner runs out that printer will become history. To those two I added a freebie inkjet printer. When its ink cartridge ran out, I debated: buy a new cartridge or refill the old one, spring for a new printer? A refill for that inkjet cost about \$20, new cartridge double that, a new inkjet printer not all that much more. I checked around and bought an all-in-one model, for a tenth of the average cost of those two early printers. Since I couldn't manage to part with the others, my first new printer in 20 years is now connected to my computer along with the dot matrix and laser. The inkjet, by far the more flexible, functions as a printer, scanner, copier and fax machine. Today, for most of us, that's the way to go.
