In medieval music as well as in music from other periods, one should insist on an interpretive access that is firmly based on the musical text. Only in this way can the specific characteristics of, for example, the song settings of Machaut be comprehended in a concrete way. Such a form of access is embodied and demonstrated here through a detailed analysis of Machaut's Pygmalion ballad.
