Undoing. Atkinson, P. Z. Master's thesis, Tufts University, 2023.
URL abstract bibtex Undoing is a concert program of original compositions that explores ideas of awareness, the relationship of self and other, expectation and agency. The concert pieces experiment with topics in music that are often presented in opposition to one another: noise and pitch, improvisation and notated music, and composer and performer, among others. The music finds ways to frustrate these dichotomies, producing a form of cognitive dissonance that invites new approaches to music composition. Deliberate friction and clamor as an avenue to greater awareness is the major theme underlying the assembled concert works: Earwash No. 1 for electronic media, Moonsick and the magic number 7 ±2 for solo piano, Ami for jazz duo, and the title work, undoing for clarinet, viola and piano trio.
