Most of the Macigno sandstone (Tertiary) of the Serchio valley in the Castelnuovo di Garfagnana area (Tuscany, Italy) is directly continuous with that of the main Apennine range to the east and northeast. It is characterized by the development of two fault systems with Apennine trends, which also affect overlying Pliocene and Pleistocene lacustrine deposits. The mass of fractured and disordered Macigno sandstone in the southwest part of the area is related to the cover of the Apuan Alps, thus disproving the existence of the "Toscanide nappe.".
