The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light, recognizing the significance of light technologies to humanity. In this paper, we review the importance of light in our lives, as the understanding of light and the interaction of light with matter was important for the advancement of knowledge and for the improvement of our life quality. The use of light in many areas of health will be discussed, from the understanding of the vision, to applications in the areas of aesthetics, oncology and environmental control.
