The distribution of shrubs along a soil water potential gradient in a desert arroyo system. Balding, F. R. Ph.D. Thesis, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, New Mexico, 1971.
abstract   bibtex
The soil water potential gradient was ascertained by placing 12 gypsum electrical resistance soil moisture blocks at 12 locations along an arroyo. The electrical resistances of the block were measured at weekly intervals during the growing season. The soil water potential values were integrated over the 26 week-period for each of the 12 locations. The results were values indicative of the total soil moisture stress the plants were subjected to during their growing period. A general integrated soil water potential curve was calculated by regressing these values onto distance down the arroyo....The results showed that the vegetation was responding not only to the soil water potential gradient, but also to the effects of interference from other species. Three types of response patterns were seen.
