In many application areas, as fusion magnets, transformers, motors or generators, high temperature superconductor (HTS) cables are of great interest. Depending on the application, cables made from several to several hundred coated conductor tapes are required. Key parameters of these cables are the current carrying capabilities, the operating temperature and the performance in magnetic background fields. Roebel assembled coated conductor cables, cables with of helically wound tapes or cables using twisted and stacked tapes are possible designs. The feasibility of these concepts has been demonstrated, comparative measurements using similar boundary conditions are still missing. This work shows magnetic field and temperature dependent measurements of Roebel assembled coated conductor cables and HTS cables with helically wound tapes. The current carrying capabilities of both cable types were measured and compared up to 10 kA in magnetic background fields up to 12 T in a temperature range of 4.5 K to 80 K. The experiments were done at the CryoMaK laboratory of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
