Paper abstract bibtex The valley of Cuatro Ciénegas, Coahuila is characterized by agricultural activity focused on the production of food for livestock, specifically alfalfa for dairy cattle in the region. These crops in arid regions require a large amount of inputs (chemical and organic), water because are based on intensive agricultural practices. This has led to changes in the chemical, physical and biological characteristics of the soil. The goal of this work is analyzed the effect of alfalfa crops on microbial activity and nutrients dynamics (C, N and P) in the agricultural zone of the Cuatro Ciénegas valley, Coahuila. In order to carry out the present objective, we perform the analysis of the dynamics and change of crop area and harvest of the municipality of Cuatro Ciénegas, Coahuila, in the period among 2010 and 2012. In the first chapter, the characterization on field was performed, this was based on a stratified random sampling to obtain fresh soil samples from two alfalfa plots for two seasons (drought and dry). We quantified the concentration of total C. N and P, available, soluble and microbial forms. To determine the microbial activity of the soil, the quantification of enzymatic activity and microbial catabolic potential was carried out. In the present study, it was observed that seasonality influences the nutrient dynamics in agricultural soils. Winter samples had higher concentrations of COD, NOD and POD as well as NH4+, whereas in summer the concentration of NO3- was three times higher than in winter.
