Human occupation and environmental evolutions since the 6th millennium BCE around the aksumite site of Wakarida (Northern Tigray, Ethiopia). Blond, N. In Addis-Abeba, Ethiopie, 2017. Centre Français des Etudes Ethiopiennes (CFEE). abstract bibtex Human settlements have an important impact on the environment and the landscapes of their surroundings. The aksumite (400 BCE – 700 CE) site of Wakarida, (northern Tigray, Ethiopia) is situated on a spur, at the north-eastern margin of the Tigrean plateau. Around Wakarida, mountains are dissected by valleys in which walls have been constructed in order to maintain soil and water for cultivation. These fillings are cut by erosion and provide interesting sedimentary records for geoarchaeology and paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Impact of anthropisation (forest clearing on the slopes, cultivation in the valley bottoms) can be studied through these accumulations. They enable us distinguishing phases of occupation and/or abandonment, in relation with archaeological excavations in the area; they record natural processes, and highlight the human-natural footprint on the environment and landscape. This presentation aims at exposing the first hypotheses and conclusions of ongoing researches on landscape evolution in northern Tigray.
