In the preface to this Special Issue, Emurian (this volume) speaks to the emergence of graduate and undergraduate programs in Information Systems separate from schools of business and management. In describing this new field, he argues that as information systems programs have developed, they have followed the compass of human–computer interaction (HCI), which he believes has served to provide an integrative framework for research and academic studies within many different academic disciplines. Thus, it seems appropriate to take a closer look at the components of HCI. To that end, we can look at a definition of HCI, taken from the report of the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer–Human Interaction (SIGCHI) Curriculum Development Group (1992): Human–computer interaction is a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use and with the study of major phenomena surrounding them...
