Syntactic variation in double modal dialects. Boertien, H. S. & Said, S. The Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest, 3(3):210 – 222, July, 1980.
abstract   bibtex
A study of syntactic variation in English double modal dialects is conducted with reference to the applicability of three syntactic rules: contraction, NP aux inversion, & tag question formation. It is found that the rules do not apply equally to all modals, nor to first & second position modals. Data examined consist of about 400 double modal utterances collected from 11 speakers. It is argued that at least two features, modal tense & position, govern the applicability of the syntactic rules in question. The principle thus obtained operates only in double modal dialects. A tense-position hierarchy is also outlined. 8 Tables, 7 References. B. Annesser Murray
