An approach to creating a national digital library. Borbinha, J. L. International Journal on Digital Libraries, 4(1):19–22, 2004.
doi  abstract   bibtex
The article relates the approach adopted by the Biblioteca Nacional (BN), also known as the National Library of Portugal, in creating a national digital library in 2004. As with most national libraries with similar missions, BN has been concerned with its future in a digital world. BN has, for a relatively long time, been an active player in the areas of technology and digital libraries, from the early days of the UNIMARC and bibliographic metadata developments to several of the most relevant international projects and initiatives. This experience, together with expertise accumulated over its 250 years of existence, is the main arsenal that BN is deploying to define its strategy for its BND–Biblioteca Nacional Digital (National Digital Library). The issue facing BND is not that it is experimental, presenting short-term results; Biblioteca's issue is to achieve stability and trustworthiness. This requires thinking seriously in terms of stable models and long-term sustainable strategies for development and convergence with the traditional library because in the end they do not want to have two different libraries, but rather one coherently functioning library. All printing houses in Portugal are required by law to deposit materials of any kind at BN. Consequently, BN holds a unique collection of printed works that represent an important potential source for digitization and also for the creation of new digital resources.
