Le héros comme un loup : usage platonicien d’une comparaison homérique [link]Paper  abstract   bibtex
In Book 1 of the « Republic », Socrates compares Thrasymachus to a wild beast who is ready to tear his opponents to pieces (R. 336 b 2-4). The comparison and the use of epic language (διαρπάζω) are Homeric. In borrowing the animal imagery from the « Iliad » and situating it in a dialectical context, Plato shifts the terms of the comparison. Thrasymachus is not only a sophist who attacks his interlocutor but is also a manifestation of the angry part of the soul that must be tamed. His aggression relates to the self.
