Cognitive-behavioral therapy with ADHD children: Child, family, and school interventions. Braswell, L. & Bloomquist, M. L. Guilford Press, New York, NY, 1991.
Paper abstract bibtex This book provides a scholarly overview of the status of ADHD [Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder] and related conditions, and offers practical treatment guidelines for the clinician. The first three chapters lay the groundwork for the authors' approach and introduce the reader to the issues surrounding ADHD—what is understood about ADHD, what symptoms might suggest ADHD but in reality do not, and what remains unknown about the disorder. A concise overview of ADHD assessment is presented, methods of monitoring treatment efficacy described, and different treatment options reviewed. The authors also describe training experiences, clinical work, and research efforts that contribute to their own treatment approach. Following the introductory chapters, six chapters delineate the authors' approach to cognitive-behavioral treatment. This approach emphasizes the importance of the active involvement of parents and school personnel in the child's treatment. Specific procedures for use with preschool, school-age, and adolescent ADHD clients are presented in an accessible format that includes charts and tables to guide implementation of specific skills. A separate chapter, comprising a complete treatment manual, details both clinic- and school-based intervention efforts. Providing a uniquely flexible model for the assessment and treatment of ADHD, this book will be a valued resource for professionals in mental health, education, and medicine. Graduate students in child clinical psychology, child development, school psychology, and special education will benefit from study of the approaches presented. The work serves as a text in courses that address school-based treatment of childhood behavioral difficulties as well as courses on child psychotherapy and behavioral interventions.
