Textual polyphony in Machaut's motets 8 and 4. Brownlee, K., (. Revista de musicología, 16(3):1554, 1, 1993. abstract bibtex Three kinds of intertextuality are illustrated through a purely literary consideration of two of Machaut's motets: (1) the dialectic between the triplum and the motetus, (2) the relationship between the triplum/motetus dialectic and an external literary context, and (3) the relationship between the triplum/motetus unit and the tenor. The multiplicity of possible readings that result from these references creates a kind of textual polyphony analogous to the polyphonic texture of the musical setting.
