An Even Better “View” of Sound: Embodied Sonic Rhetorics and Sound Detectives [link]Paper  doi  abstract   bibtex
This article illuminates embodiment and accessibility in sound studies through embodied sonic rhetorics. Analyzing embodied experiences of sound reveals how individuals engage with sounds and noises differently, including through imagination and interconnected mental and physical experiences and feelings. To unpack key aspects of embodied sonic rhetorics, this article studies a podcast cocreated by LeVar Burton, Sound Detectives, which centers entirely on sound and asks audiences to listen critically to the sounds of our world. Indications of embodied sonic rhetorics include listening carefully to unknown sounds in a process that includes learning from incorrect guesses; describing noises and feelings to enrich sonic experiences; sharing memories, emotions, and imagination with appreciation of resonance; and accessing sound through embodiment, vibrations, and movement. The exploration of Sound Detectives connects with the concluding section’s guidance for analysis through the lens of embodied sonic rhetorics with an emphasis on feelings.
