Humans and Winds in Deserts. Callot, Y. In Joly, F. & Bourrié, G., editors, Mankind and Deserts 3: Wind in Deserts and Civilizations, pages 79–105. John Wiley & Sons, Ltd, 2021. Section: 2 _eprint: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1002/9781119824022.ch2Paper doi abstract bibtex The relations between humans and the wind are sometimes difficult and complicated. The wind is changeable, ubiquitous and varies in different places in the same region, depending on the relief. Certain ancient techniques are so effective at protecting against the sands that they are very much in use today. Certain aeolian formations can offer remarkable agricultural potential while also presenting grave risks. While the creation of the Green Barrier met with many difficulties, the theoretical basis of its creation itself included a basic mistake, chiefly resulting from a poor understanding of aeolian dynamics. The very real encroachment of sand into Sahel region was actually due to a combination of several factors. These include: the abundant sandy substrate of the active dunes in the Ogolian Erg, the omnipresence of the harmattan in the Sahel, and consecutive droughts that hit the Sahel from 1970 to 1990.
