Paper abstract bibtex The workshop from which this paper is derived summarized the circumstances and the stages of development of an innovative Native American education program I helped to establish, and provided participatns with an voerview of basic principles for use in creating similar programs in their own local situations. In the following pages, I will explain in greater detail the reasons for the choices we made in designing the program, and suggest some ways ot avoid setbacks that can undermine efforts to make the revitalization of First Nations languages and cultures a fundamental part of Indian students' learning in public school settings. I maintain that the integration of indigenous language and culture into mainstream classroom instruction is a natural and necessary component of an overall strategy for saving endangered ways of life which are essential for our shared future.
