Teoria E Pratica Dell'encomiastica in Un Dibattito Accademico Del Settecento [link]Paper  abstract   bibtex
The article examines a debate in the 18th century over the proper techniques for writing eulogies (elogi) for distinguished individuals, with a focus on a competition held by the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts in Mantua, Italy in 1784 and 1786. The key findings reveal a distinction between "oratorical" and "historical" styles of eulogy, as well as a discussion on the appropriate balance between praising the subject's virtues and acknowledging their flaws. The debate also reflects broader conflicts between French and Italian literary tastes, with the Italians seeking to defend their own traditions against perceived French cultural hegemony. The study concludes that eulogies were seen as having the purpose of inspiring virtue and honoring the deserving, rather than just flattery.
