The late stages of the geological evolution of the Apuan Alps (NW Tuscany, Italy) are characterized by brittle faulting associated to the final exhumation of the Apuan Alps metamorphic units. This paper shows the main results of a geological-structural study performed at the mesoscale and concerning high-angle brittle structures (faults and fractures) occurring in Fantiscritti marble basin, an area located within the Carrara sector of the Apuan Alps. Data about geometric and kinematic features of brittle faults have been collected on seven different sites, and allowed to define the paleostress and, consequently, the tectonic context in which the brittle structures developed. As a result, a polyphase evolution of the brittle deformation can be outlined, which is characterized by a first phase consistent with a strike-slip tectonic regime (paleostress tensors with vertical sigma 2 stress axes and approx. N-S trending horizontal sigma 1 stress axes) that generated NE-SW trending sinistral strike-slip faults and NNW-SSE trending dextral strike-slip faults. The subsequent brittle deformation phase is extensional (paleostress tensors with vertical sigma 1), and caused the development of normal faults which generally drove a reactivation of the pre-existing brittle structures. Locally, the transition between the two brittle deformation phases occurs by degrees through permutation of sigma 1 and sigma 2 stress axes. Finally, the relevance of the brittle structure analysis with the purpose of defining the tectonic residual component of the in-situ stress of a rock mass will be shown in brief.
