Three different extensional events are recorded in the Larderello geothermal field (southern Tuscany): the first occurred during early-middle Miocene (Burdigalian-Langhian) and was associated with development of normal faults which terminate downward in late Triassic evaporite levels. During this event the Alpi Apuane core complex and the "serie ridotta" phenomenon developed. From the Serravallian to late Messinian, a second extensional event occurred. This was also characterized by listric normal faults which terminated downward in Paleozoic phyllites. A third event (Pliocene-Present) was characterized by normal faulting and development of Pliocene tectonic depressions. The normal faults of this event tend to flatten in the present brittle/ductile boundary which is bounded, at the top, by an important seismic reflector referred as to K-horizon. These faults merge downward within a shear zone which is presently located along the brittle/ductile boundary. This multistage extensional tectonics, related to regional post-collisional evolution (Early Miocene-Present) was accompanied by crustal uplift and downward migration of the brittle/ductile boundary toward deeper crustal levels. This structural evolution is supported by the results on mica cooling ages obtained from borehole samples: four different cooling ages have been recorded, from this work and already published papers: the oldest exhumation age (27-25 Ma) is related to the end of the collisional stage, whilst the second (?-12 Ma), the third (10-7 Ma) and the fourth (3.8-1.6 Ma) are related to post-collisional extensional tectonics.
