This analysis describes an attempt to use status symbols (a) to test the unidimensionality of perceived social prestige; (b) to develop an instru- ment for measuring subjective status; and (c) to measure ability to judge prestige. The symbols in the study are photographs of living rooms, the subjects are housewives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the measure- ment model is the Guttman scale.
