A sensor based on the optical excitation and interrogation of a surface plasmon on the tip of a single-mode optical fiber is described. The new interrogation technique is based on the analysis of the state of polarization of the beam reflected in the presence of an excited plasmon. Preliminary experiments confirm the theoretical analysis and point out the feasibility of a chemical sensor based on the new technique. ?? 1993.
