The Meaning of Home: literature review and directions for future research and theoretical development. Després, C. Journal of Architectural and Planning Research, 8(2):96–115, 1991. ZSCC: 0000578
Paper abstract bibtex [This paper reviews mainstream empirical literature on the meaning of home published between 1974 and 1989 — mostly in contemporary North American culture — in disciplines investigating person—environment relationships. It is argued that an important part of this body of literature has defined the meaning of home mostly for traditional households living in single-family detached houses although it is shown that there is a growing concern among recent studies for investigating nontraditional populations and settings. Furthermore, it is argued that the role of material aspects of housing and of societal forces in the production and reproduction of the meaning of home has been neglected. Exemplary studies from other areas of housing research which emphasize these macro/societal-forces are presented. From this critical review, the paper concludes that more integrative theoretical perspectives on environmental meaning need to be adopted to investigate home environments.]
