In Pursuit of the Colon: A Century of Scholarly Progress: 1880-1980. Dillon, J. T. The Journal of Higher Education, 53(1):93--99, 1982.
Paper abstract bibtex Titular colonicity (presence of colon in title) is shown to index the dramatic progress of scholarship over a century of endeavor. Analysis of 1,150 titles in education, psychology, and literary criticism reveals that since its first lone appearance in 1886, the colon has risen to distinguish the majority of contemporary titles across disciplines, thereby demonstrating the progressive complexity of the scholarly enterprise. Historical antecedents of the colon are explored and implications for research noted.
