Paper abstract bibtex The article discusses the intersection of the development of the petroleum industry and Protestant Evangelicalism in the U.S. southwest in the 20th century. According to the article, several communities in the region, such as Beaumont, Texas, nurtured spiritual enthusiasm and faith at the prospects of oil beginning roughly in 1901. The author examines the perception that the existence of oil, also referred to as black gold, in the region was seen as a special gift from God meant to advance the kingdom of God. The article also discusses the history of religion and oil in the U.S. beginning in the 19th century, including the views of the late U.S. oil magnate John D. Rockefeller.
