Preserved figure-ground segregation and symmetry perception in visual neglect. Driver, J., Baylis, G., & Rafal, R. Nature, 360(6399):73–75, 1992.
doi  abstract   bibtex
Describes the case of a 69-yr-old man with right-hemisphere damage and severe left neglect whose attentional impairment arose after normal segmentation of the image into figures and background has taken place. Information that is neglected and unavailable to higher levels of visual processing may be processed by earlier stages in the visual system concerned with segmentation.
