Works of the Law and the Curse of the Law (Galatians 3:10-14). Dunn, J. D.<nbsp>G. New Testament Studies, 31(4):523--542, October, 1985.
abstract bibtex
In critique of E P Sanders and H Räisänen, it is evident that the law in fact served as an identity and boundary marker for ethnic Israel (the social function of the law). Paul's phrase, "the works of the law" refers to that "service of the law" by which the devout Jew maintained his identity within the people of the law in distinction from the (other) nations. Paul saw that attitude as an inadequate understanding of the law, as emphasizing too much the outward and physical and therefore as falling under the law's own curse, not least because it prevented the blesssing of Abraham extending beyond the boundary of the law to the Gentiles.
