Website abstract bibtex Citizen science projects have grown in number, scale and scope in recent years. Such projects engage members of the public in working with professional scientists in a diverse range of practices. Yet there has been little specifically educational research in such projects to date, or of the conceptualisation of citizenship within them. In particular, there has been limited exploration of the specific educational backgrounds of contributors to citizen science, or of the practices through which they have gained knowledge of the area or continue to learn from participation in such projects. Drawing upon survey data of volunteering more broadly and citizen science specifically, this article seeks to identify gaps in the existing research and possibilities for researchers. In addition, it also explores the conceptualisation of contributors as citizens, interchangeably also identified as volunteers and amateurs, and its implications.
