Personal identity and the causal theory of memory [link]Paper  doi  abstract   bibtex
[first paragraph] John Perry, in "Personal Identity, Memory, and the Problem of Circularity," offers a defense of memory theories of personal identity against charges of circularity. The best known of such charges has it that "genuine memory," which memory theories invoke, can only be analyzed by reference to the notion "same person." Perry argues in reply that "genuine memory" is better accounted for on a causal model which makes no use of the concept of "personal identity." In this article, I will argue that Perry's account of personal identity in terms of a causal theory of memory is too narrow; that is, it is restricted to a proper subset of the class of persons. In addition, I contend that efforts to liberalize his account either remain too narrow, or fail to provide an adequate characterization of the causal processes underlying memory for purposes of determining personal identity.
