Theaimofthispaperistopresent ourapproachfortheredesignofathematicDigital Library(DL) relatedspecificallytothehistoryof Europeanintegration(calledEuropeanNAvigator, ENA). For thenext versionofthisDL(calledENA2010), special attentionhasbeenpaidtoDLuserexperience. Ourapproachfor theredesignhasbeenbasedonconsultingDLuser’scommunitiesbeforestartingthepracticaldesignofthenext DL. TheDLuser’scommunitiesstudypermittedtoobtainalist of users’ expectationsandneedstowardsthe DL. We made the observation that if some users’ expectations and needs would be possibly solved by functionalityonthescreen;otherusers’expectationsandneedsaremuchmorecomplextomeetbecausetheygo beyondtheoriginal roleexpectedfromaDLwhichistofacilitatetheaccesstoobjectsofinformationandoffer acollectionofservicestotheusers. Theresultsdemonstratedtheinterest ofachievingaDLusersstudyinthe preliminary phases of a DLproject. Through this user-centered design approach, it has been possible to incorporateusers' perspectivesintothedevelopment ofour thematicDL. Ultimately, it enablestobettermatch users' expectations and needs and topromote user experience.
