Partial Solutions of Swift's 18th Century Mock Latin Passages [link]Paper  doi  abstract   bibtex
Jonathan Swift is well known as the author of Gulliver's travels. He is less well known for his use of a form of Phonetic Cryptography that he employed in an effort to conceal the scatalogical nature of some of his poems and correspondence. His method was so simple that it appears to have eluded the attention of Swift scholars and students of his works since the end of the 17th century. Until the appearance of this article, the meaning of some selected passages has remained hidden. As cited in the article, some of them can still be found in the literature in their Anglo-Latin or Mock-Latin forms.
