	Annote = {Interesting summary of two papers in the same issue describing the localizaton and role of phosphatidylserine and receptors for this lipid. Basically it appears that the occurs in the plasma membrane in an asymmetric fashion. The lipid transduces signals not by metabolism but by its localization behavior.

There are open questions on how the assymetric localization within the plasma membrane of this lipid is mintained.

Also, the presence of the lipid on cell surfaces (i.e., on the opposite side to its usual location) result in phagocytosis, though other signals are also probably involved.

They also mention an interesting process which is used by the vaccinia virus to infect cells and which may be characteristic of virii that have lipid bilayer coating. Since the infected cell it buds from is undergoing apoptosis, the infected cell membrane is scrambled, the budding virus also has its lipid bilayer scrambled, resulting in phosphatidylserine on the cell surface - which encourages other cells to ingest it, as if it were cell undergoing apoptosis

They also note that a natural compound with anti HIV properties binds to phosphatidylserine - implying that HIV requires this lipid for infection - and that the natural product hinders / occludes phosphatidylserine on the viral surface},
