[first paragraph] ANYONE who participates regularly in philosophical discussion \textgreater soon becomes accustomed to discovering that what he says has f been imperfectly understood. Nonetheless, I am astonished to find | that someone regards me as holding an opinion about Descartes which * is entirely foreign to my interpretation of Descartes' enterprise. In \textgreater commenting recently on my essay, "Memory and the Cartesian Circle,"1 John Nelson ascribes to me the belief that Descartes did not attempt to show that the clarity and distinctness of ideas guarantees \textless their truth.2 This belief is precisely opposite to the view of the matter 3. which I maintain. Moreover, it is difficult for me to see how a con- I scientious and intelligent reader could have misunderstood my essay t as Nelson does.
