Integer programminghasbenefitedfrom manyinnovations in modelsandmethods.Someof the promising directionsfor elaboratingtheseinnovations in the future may be viewedfrom a framework that links the perspectivesof artificial intelligenceand operationsresearch.To demonstratethis, four keyareas are examined:(1)controlled randomization, (2)learningstrategies,(3) induceddecompositionand (4) tabu search.Eachoftheseis shown to havecharacteristicsthat appearusefullyrelevantto developmentson the horizon.
