Die Biodiversitätskrise in den Medien: Faktoren medialer (Nicht-)Aufmerksamkeit auf das Artensterben [pdf]Paper  abstract   bibtex
This thesis deals with the quantity and quality of reporting on the biodiversity crisis in Austrian print media. Based on a theoretical analysis and the production of a print product, this thesis examines news factors that make biodiversity-related issues newsworthy. Based on the realization that the biodiversity crisis receives significantly less media attention than the climate crisis, although they are considered twin crises from a scientific point of view, reasons for this discrepancy are developed. It turns out that the biodiversity crisis and associated concepts have a great deal of media potential. To exploit this potential, some challenges must still be overcome, particularly regarding the abstract nature of the concept of biodiversity, the negative connotation of the crisis and the question of the responsible department. The central research interest is to develop factors that enable and define constructive reporting on the biodiversity crisis. The work builds on findings from research into constructive journalism and science journalism.
