In North American countries, the word dissertation is generally used whereas in European and some other countries the term thesis is generally used for doctoral research work. The present bibliography comprises research produced as doctoral dissertations and doctoral theses dealing with library cataloging, classification, and metadata. An attempt has been made to cover all the aspects of these topics so as to match the coverage of this bibliography with the scope of the journal, Cataloging & Classification Quarterly. Topics include but are not limited to: descriptive cataloging, classification and subject access, use and usability issues (related to bibliographic data, authority data, the catalog or other discovery platform), education and training for cataloging and classification, the internationalization of cataloging, the management of cataloging and related functions, the use of bibliographic or authority data by systems outside the OPAC, online retrieval, metadata standards, and cataloging related to specific materials or processes (such as digital resources, archives, special collections, maps and other cartographic and spatial materials, preservation). The current list includes research works published in the English language from all over the world, but chiefly in United States. It contains 170 titles, accepted in 1982 or later, that were available for online and database searching through November 25, 2019.2 CONTACT Salman Haider salman.mlisc@gmail.com Library of Congress, New Delhi Office, American Center, 24, K.G. The contents of this bibliography will inform catalogers, library administrators, and library and information science (LIS) researchers about the current state of cataloging research. The aim is to inspire more cataloging research and to promote a culture of evaluation within the cataloging profession. This bibliography of doctoral dissertations is for the purpose of providing information about research studies already undertaken to help future researchers—whether they are preparing a literature review for an article or a dissertation—in identifying and formulating topics for their own research and will lessen the possibility of a researcher pursuing a topic of research without taking previous, relevant work into account. Methodology The citations for the bibliography are compiled through systematic searching in various online databases, such as ProQuest’s Dissertations & Theses database, PQDT Open, EBSCO Open Dissertations, OCLC WorldCat, Center for Research Libraries, E-Prints in Library & Information Science, OpenThesis, Open Access Theses and Dissertation, NDLTD (Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations), library catalogs of various universities, the digital repositories and digital libraries of individual universities and colleges, and Google. Keywords used in searching Cataloging, cataloging, catalogs, catalogs, library classification, shelflisting, Dewey Decimal Classification, DDC, Library of Congress Classification (LCC), Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, AACR2, ISBD, MARC, subject cataloging, subject headings, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), authority control, bibliographical control, Resource Description and Access (RDA), FRBR, FRAD, FRSAD, IFLA LRM, metadata, information organization, knowledge organization, OCLC, WorldCat, semantic web, linked data, etc. Arrangement of entries The entries of the bibliography are arranged by the year of publication. Under each year of the publication the dissertations and theses are arranged further alphabetically by the names of the authors which are given in an inverted order (surname, forename). CATALOGING & CLASSIFICATION QUARTERLY 29Omissions and updates An update to this bibliography will be published annually in Cataloging & Classification Quarterly. Omissions of doctoral dissertations accepted between 1982 and 2019 but not included in this bibliography or notifications of new works should be sent to Salman Haider [email: salman.mlisc@gmail.com] for inclusion in subsequent bibliographies. Research: A Bibliography of Doctoral Dissertations
Salman Haider
Library of Congress, New Delhi Office, New Delhi, India
Introduction
The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines research as “studious
inquiry or examination; especially: investigation or experimentation aimed
at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories
or laws in the light of new facts, or practical applications of such new or
revised theories or laws.”1 A doctoral dissertation is a document which is
submitted by the author where he/she presents his/her research and findings in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of
Philosophy. In North American countries, the word dissertation is generally used whereas in European and some other countries the term thesis is
generally used for doctoral research work. The present bibliography comprises research produced as doctoral dissertations and doctoral theses dealing with library cataloging, classification, and metadata. An attempt has
been made to cover all the aspects of these topics so as to match the
coverage of this bibliography with the scope of the journal, Cataloging \&
Classification Quarterly. Topics include but are not limited to: descriptive
cataloging, classification and subject access, use and usability issues
(related to bibliographic data, authority data, the catalog or other discovery platform), education and training for cataloging and classification,
the internationalization of cataloging, the management of cataloging
and related functions, the use of bibliographic or authority data by systems
outside the OPAC, online retrieval, metadata standards, and cataloging
related to specific materials or processes (such as digital resources,
archives, special collections, maps and other cartographic and spatial materials, preservation).
The current list includes research works published in the English
language from all over the world, but chiefly in United States. It contains
170 titles, accepted in 1982 or later, that were available for online and
database searching through November 25, 2019.2

2020, VOL. 58, NO. 1, 28–43
https://doi.org/10.1080/01639374.2019.1707338Understanding cataloging, classification, and metadata research literature
can improve its practice, management, and professional decision making.
The contents of this bibliography will inform catalogers, library administrators, and library and information science (LIS) researchers about the current state of cataloging research. The aim is to inspire more cataloging
research and to promote a culture of evaluation within the cataloging profession. This bibliography of doctoral dissertations is for the purpose of
providing information about research studies already undertaken to help
future researchers—whether they are preparing a literature review for an
article or a dissertation—in identifying and formulating topics for their
own research and will lessen the possibility of a researcher pursuing a topic
of research without taking previous, relevant work into account.
Methodology
The citations for the bibliography are compiled through systematic searching in various online databases, such as ProQuest’s Dissertations \& Theses
database, PQDT Open, EBSCO Open Dissertations, OCLC WorldCat,
Center for Research Libraries, E-Prints in Library \& Information Science,
OpenThesis, Open Access Theses and Dissertation, NDLTD (Networked
Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations), library catalogs of various universities, the digital repositories and digital libraries of individual universities and colleges, and Google.
Keywords used in searching
Cataloging, cataloging, catalogs, catalogs, library classification, shelflisting,
Dewey Decimal Classification, DDC, Library of Congress Classification
(LCC), Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, AACR2, ISBD, MARC, subject
cataloging, subject headings, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH),
authority control, bibliographical control, Resource Description and Access
(RDA), FRBR, FRAD, FRSAD, IFLA LRM, metadata, information organization, knowledge organization, OCLC, WorldCat, semantic web, linked
data, etc.
Arrangement of entries
The entries of the bibliography are arranged by the year of publication.
Under each year of the publication the dissertations and theses are
arranged further alphabetically by the names of the authors which are given
in an inverted order (surname, forename).
CATALOGING \& CLASSIFICATION QUARTERLY 29Omissions and updates
An update to this bibliography will be published annually in Cataloging
\& Classification Quarterly. Omissions of doctoral dissertations accepted
between 1982 and 2019 but not included in this bibliography or notifications of new works should be sent to Salman Haider [email:
salman.mlisc@gmail.com] for inclusion in subsequent bibliographies.
