Genetic and environmental determinants of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Hamman, R. F Diabetes/metabolism reviews, 8(4):287–338, 1992. ISBN: 0742-4221 (Print) 0742-4221 (Linking)doi abstract bibtex This review of the genetic and environmental determinants of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM or type 2 diabetes mellitus) summarizes recent findings related to the epidemi- ology and natural history of the disease. It attempts to integrate findings from population studies of genetic markers and environmental factors such as diet a n d physical activity that are likely to interact to cause NIDDM. It includes some emphasis on our work in the biethnic Hispanic and non-Hispanic white population of Colorado, the San Luis Valley Diabetes Study (SLVDS). Descriptive data on the frequency of NIDDM and exploration of the data that identify risk factors which operate at various stages in the natural history of NIDDM are described. Problems and methodologic issues are also high- lighted.
