The Loqua: Creating and Composing a New Genre [link]URL  abstract   bibtex
For my thesis project, I have created a novel music genre that aims to emphasize contemplation and communication in music. I called this novel genre the “loqua”, derived from the Latin verb, loqui , for ‘talking’ or ‘chatting’. A loqua is distinct from other set forms, because it places equal emphasis on crafting the song’s subject and its music. A loqua form is a template organized by non-musical functions that process and contextualize the subject through external and internal, objective and subjective perspectives. This is so the loqua can imbue deeper reflection and thorough communication into the creative and listening musical experiences, engaging both musicians and listeners to pay closer attention to what is being said in a piece of music. I have strived to design this genre as an effective enough model for composers and performers to confidently adopt it into a budding practice and establish a repertory for it
