We consider a non-traditional assignment problem that arose at a New Zealand oil refinery. A mixed integer program is developed to determine an assignment of pumps to tanks that minimizes the time required to perform a blending operation. The formulation involves a non-traditional transformation of the objective function which is interesting in its own right. An extension, in which we show how to reduce the pumping time by using more expensive component materials used in the blend, is provided here.
