My Inner Experiencing of Experiential Therapy. Hill, C. E. Contemporary Psychology: A Journal of Reviews, 42(2):129–130, 1997.
Paper doi abstract bibtex This is a review of the book, "The Complete Guide to Experiential Psychotherapy" (see record 1995-98900-000)by Alvin R. Mahrer. The reviewer, C. Hill examines Mahrer's concept of experimental psychotherapy. Hill agrees with Mahrer's belief that a patient should focus on the inner experiencing and moving to implementing the experiencing in life. Mahrer's type of therapy is clearly distinct from other theoretical approaches. He emphasizes going into the depths of one's inner experiencing. This type of therapy is particularly of valuable for a patient who is out of touch with his or her feelings, as many people are in our culture. Interventions, however, that are valuable in other approaches are missing (e.g., insight, dealing with relationships). According to Hill, Mahrer provides good examples of how he does very intense and potentially beneficial therapy. The therapy seems fun, stimulating, and exciting for the therapist as well as the patient. However, the reviewer did point out that it is not a therapy that every therapist will want to do. Hill states that Mahrer has been able to describe the theory in as clear and user-friendly terms as he has described the clinical application of the theory.
