David Thompson came to North America as an apprentice clerk to the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1790 Philip Turnor, a great surveyor and practical astronomer, was hired by the Hudson's Bay Company, under pressure from the Foreign Office of Great Britain, in order that the Hudson's Bay Company might provide the British government with adequate maps of Rupert's Land. He trained both David Thompson and Peter Fidler in the course of making his own surveys. -from Author
